Guys I’m gonna be honest, I was going to just can the whole “Christmas themed” blog post and maybe write something different or recycle an old post. BUT THEN I heard a couple of great lessons over the last couple of weeks at my church and had some additional thoughts and it made me even more excited to celebrate this season, and I could not resist sharing!
So what’s the big deal? Christmas right? I mean I love all the extra stuff like lights and trees and family and games. But the heart of Christmas, is the birth of Jesus. And man do I love that too. Here’s why:
First Off, It’s JESUS. Hello. God’s Son. God in the flesh. All of our questions about who God is get answered in the person of Jesus.
“In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.”
Hebrews 1:1-3
“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and they will call him Immanuel (which means “God with us”)” Matthew 1:23
Secondly Jesus IS THE WORD. All of the word we see written, and we wonder, “how can this be? How can this be lived out?” Is displayed in the life and love of Jesus. We get the full on example of what God would do in the flesh. (Why do you think those w.w.j.d. bracelets were such a hit when we were kids?!) We get to see what he would do through Jesus, and respond accordingly. He is not only the Messenger, he IS the Message.
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14
I want you to think about all the reasons you love Jesus. Maybe it’s his perfect example. Or maybe it’s how he loved and took care of his followers and even more so, people who weren’t his followers. Maybe it’s the HUGE fact that he died for our sins. The way he stands up for the weak. The lessons he teaches in subtle actions and big actions alike. Maybe it’s his overwhelming peace or grace.
This is why Christmas is a big deal. Why advent is a big deal.
It is God coming. The Word Coming. Jesus (and all of these things that you love about him) coming to Earth, to be with you, lead you, and love you.

If you want to tell me why you love and celebrate Jesus and his birth in the comments, I would LOVE to hear.
I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas week!
